Introduction to Kugans

This guide comes from the old wiki and is being reviewed; some details may be out of date. The Codex always shows the current game data.

What is a Kugan?

Kugans Intro.png

On DARO, in order to free players from their original routine, you can use the Kugans System.

This system offers a large panel of possibilities to a player by adding skills, affecting skills that are "already in the Skill Tree", or just adding stat points.

Any Kugan can be taken no matter the job you are, as long as you have Kugan Points to spend. These points are given while leveling and are based on their own EXP table.

Your character starts at Kugan Level 0, up to Kugan Level 70. You can earn up to 70 Kugan Points at max level.

Two main categories are available:

  • The Classic List is a list in which you can pick as many passive or active Kugans as you want.
  • The Specializations are a complete system related to a group of skills. Pick a specialization and you will be able to use your Kugan Points to learn all the proposed skills.
    • Note that you can choose only one specialization until you reach Kugan Level 51, which unlocks a second specialization, with a maximum of 50 points spent in each specialization.

How to get?

You can get a Kugan by learning the appropriate specialization if it belongs to one; if not, just pick it up!

  • Concerning the second specialization, you can only spend points in it if you have already spent at least 50 points in classic, passive or signature Kugans.
    • For example, if you are Kugan Level 55, you can spend only 5 points in your second specialization or in any other Kugan category.

Enable Skill

If a skill is granted by a Kugan, the Kugan is generally modified to be usable whatever the weapon carried or used. Usually this is associated with the skill being in a so-called "minor" version (see below).

How to learn?

  • In order to learn a Kugan, go to the Midgard Library, choose any Kugan you are interested in and talk to the corresponding NPC. You need enough Kugan Points to master it. You get Kugan Points by gaining Kugan Levels.
  • The maximum level you can reach for a Kugan skill depends on your Kugan Level: you can't get a skill straight to level 5.
    • Skill level 2 is available from Kugan Level 5, level 3 from Kugan Level 10, level 4 from Kugan Level 15 and level 5 from Kugan Level 20.
    • From Kugan Level 20 on, you can spend your Kugan Points as you want.

How to reset?

Resets are free. Just talk to the NPC called "Books of Forgotten" deep inside the Kugan Library in Midgard.

Specific Cases

  • If the minor version of a skill already has an increased SP cost, it does not affect the SP cost further.

Lexicon

Minor version of a skill

We sometimes speak of a minor version of a skill. In such a case, the skill generally undergoes the following modifications:

  • SP cost increased by 50%
  • Can be used with any weapon

Mutation of a skill

The mutation of a skill is an additional effect added onto a skill. The mutation works best when the mutated skill is learned to its maximum level but used at its lowest level. The effects added by the mutation are always described as if using the skill optimally: used at level 1 and learned at maximum level.

  • When used at a higher level, each level beyond level 1 reduces the effects of the mutation as follows: Effects = 100% * (Level Max - Level used + 1) / Level Max.
  • When used without having learned the maximum level, the effects of the mutation are reduced as follows: Effects = 100% * Level learned / Level Max.
See the Mutated Skills guide for more details about this.

Devotion to an element

We sometimes speak of devotion to an element. It determines a bonus to specialization skills that are "already acquired" and therefore only accessible through Kugan: every point spent in the Wizard/Ninja skill tree increases the devotion by 2.5% for the element of the spell, up to a maximum of 100%. Every point spent in a skill of another element lowers the devotion to the other elements by 0.75%.

Mastery to an element

Mastery is divided into two parts, Science and Expertise. Kugans giving Mastery to an element give both Expertise and Science.

Expertise

When the player suffers a penalty from an element, the Expertise decreases the loss by its value in percent.

  • Example: you hit a Holy 4 enemy with Water. You should do 20% of your original damage, so you lose 80% of it. With 50% Expertise, this penalty is decreased by half, so you only have a 40% penalty against Holy 4 and end up doing 60% of your original damage.

Science

When the player benefits from an element bonus, the Science increases the bonus by its value in percent.

  • Example: you hit an Earth 3 enemy with Fire and 50% Science. You should do 180% of your original damage. The 80% bonus is increased by your Science value, so you hit your target for 220% of your original damage.

Summon Power

We sometimes speak of a summon's power. It applies to skills which grant one or multiple summons: the summon power defines the ratio of the summon's attributes while the summon's level is equal to its master's level. One to one: the higher, the better.
